The Naftelijeh mud volcano, which is located near the city of Gomishan on the eastern coast of the Caspian Sea, is among the natural attractions of Golestan Province, in northern Iran. Appearing in pink most of the time, this mud volcano is as high as 8 meters and has a diameter of 500 meters. To the top of the volcano, there is a small lake out of which salty water accompanied by gases and clay comes out with pressure. The clay existing in Naftelijeh is used for the treatment of neurological diseases as well as muscle cramps and the early stages of vasoconstriction, among others. Taking a bath in mud volcanos is said to be useful as well.
